Clinically Serious Personality Disorders, very complex assessment, intervention and counseling services, are provided services, but are NOT included in the treatment and specialties descriptions listed below.

Anxiety Disorders Treatment

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress and can be beneficial in some situations. It can alert us to dangers and help us prepare and pay attention. Anxiety disorders differs from normal feelings of nervousness or anxiousness, and involve excessive fear or anxiety.  Major anxiety disorders are: generalized Anxiety disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive disorder (OCD), Panic disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Social Phobia or Social Anxiety Disorder

To be effective, treatment and focus is directed at the person’s specific anxieties and tailored to his or her needs. (Note: A typical “side effect” of psychotherapy is temporary discomfort involved with thinking about confronting feared situations. However, the benefit of relief outweighs moments of discomfort initially.)

Anxiety disorders are generally treated with psychotherapy, and medication, or both.

Abuse/Trauma Treatment

All individuals have unique ways that trauma is processed, whatever the issue is and how long ago it happened, and it impacts the retelling of traumatic experiences.  My approach keeps this critical truth in mind during sessions.

-  The treatment progresses at the appropriate rate for the individual client and trauma treatment includes helping poorly defended clients develop more adequate coping strategies (e.g., relaxation training, stress reduction exercises, cognitive modulation of affect through self-talk).

-  Tolerance for exposure to the traumatic material, is measured and facilitates the positive integration of the traumatic memories within their personal history and identity. Over time, this process begins to replace the persistent patterns of hyperarousal and avoidance with healing integration and acceptance of the traumatic experience.

Mood Disorders and Depression Treatment

All of us may feel sad or "blue" sometimes, and it may last a few days and the depression many times may be caused by a recent situation or event.  However, persistent and chronic depression can be a serious medical illness; it’s not something that you have made up in your head. It’s more than just feeling "down in the dumps" or "blue" for a few days. It’s feeling "down" and "low" and "hopeless" for weeks at a time.

Initially, it is important to perform a thorough assessment of client’s symptoms, even if they arrive and tell me their diagnosis made by another clinician.  When accurately diagnosed and treated, people with mood disorders can live healthy, stable lives. To be effective, treatment and focus is directed at the person’s specific symptoms of depression and is tailored to his or her needs. The underlying problem with mood disorders is it primarily affects a person’s mood or persistent emotional state such as major depression, dysthymia, bi-polar disorder, substance-induced mood disorder, seasonal affective disorder, the most common types, and other mood disorders. Medication, such as antidepressant or mood-stabilizer medications, may be considered; depending on the assessment and client's agreement.
